TCH 130: Prompt Seventeen: Juvenile Justice System

I think that it is important that there is a Juvenile system that is separate and different from regular court. As we discussed in class I think that it is absolutely crazy that children can be given life in prison when they are not even fully developed yet both physically and mentally. I think it is important to have a system in place that recognizes the changes and underdevelopment of minors verses those of adults. At this age individuals are more likely to be easily influenced, more likely to take risks, and not able to rationalize or think through their actions that they might have consequences. It is important to have a system that is looking out for minors and the decisions that they make to help put them on a better path.

I think that it is important to have middle schools because they focus on the young adolescents development in a way that a junior high does not. By having advisory periods it can help students express themselves and work through any difficulties they may be having. If there is a focus on the students rather than just the material it truly benefits the students learning and development. By having a middle school focus on development and understanding what the students are going through it helps build up the relationships between teacher and students. After this class I truly do not see the benefit of a traditional style classroom. Helping young adolescents understand and become comfortable and understanding of their changing bodies can have a huge impact in and outside of the classroom.
