TCH 130: Prompt Sixteen: Learning Community

I would define a learning community as a place that encourages growth and development. I think a learning community is a place that encourages questions no matter how simple or complex. I think it is simply a community that is nice to one another and has a common goal: to learn. I think that it is important to use class time to develop a learning community by encouraging students to ask questions. Let the students know that it is okay for them to raise their hand if there is something that they do not understand. Encourage students to come to class with questions and then have them work together to come up with an answer. This allows for students to work together and learn about something they might not have thought of. I think that a learning community is important when working with young adolescents because it allows them to critically think about a topic and allows for collaborative thinking to expand onto ideas. I think being social is really important and it helps students feel like they belong at a time when they are really developing in new social environments. Feeling like YA's have a place they can safely learn and express themselves will promote future learning.
